With winter starting up here in Minnesota, it also means the start up for St. Cloud State Basketball. The Women’s basketball team will officially begin the basketball season today as they take on the University of Minnesota Morris on Wednesday at 7:00 pm, and open up the regular season on Saturday, November 10th, against Valley City State University.

The Huskies are looking to have a strong outcome this year, after finishing 17-10 last year, and 14-8 in a competitive NSIC, along with playing outstanding at home with a record of 11-3.

The team is returning eleven players from last year, after graduating four seniors. Some players to look for this year are, NSIC Player to watch, Madelin Dammann, Sophomore Tori Wortz, and Mallie Doucette.

Dammann, a Junior Guard is looking to elevate her game this year, and help out the team with her deadly shooting from the guard position. Last year, Dammann shot 46% from the field and from beyond the arc. She also scored a career high, 21 points last season verses Minnesota Crookston.

Another weapon to make the Huskies front court more dangerous is Sophomore Tori Wortz. Wortz, mid-way through the season, made the starting rotation as a freshman, and made a big impact right away. The crafty guard averaged over ten points per game, as well as shooting 42% from the field. Coach Fish says that she has been working on her perimeter shooting during the offseason which has her excited, and says she will be more dangerous player on the court.

“Tori played outstanding during her freshman year,” said Head Basketball Coach, Lori Fish. “She really put in the work during the offseason to improve on her perimeter shooting, and it’s going to make it tough for defenders to guard her.” Fish also praised Wortz, with her play on the defensive side as well.

Mallie Doucette, is entering her senior year, and is one of the many leaders on this Huskies team to help her team this year. Last year, Doucette was an impact player that helped sparked the Huskies when she came off the bench, with hitting a clutch shot to start an offensive run, or getting a key defensive stop.

Along with having eleven returning athletes, the team also added seven new faces to the team this year, with five new freshman, and two JUCO transfers.

Tip off for Wednesday’s game will start up at 7:00 pm, and you can hear the game on the KVSC Sports Stream, with Husky Den Pre-game show starting at 6:45 pm.
