SCSU Men's Basketball Splits in MIAA/NSIC Challenge
Jon Averkamp Exploded with Back-To-Back 25 Point Games

St. Cloud State Men's Basketball opened their season this past weekend with a third straight trip to the MIAA/NSIC Challenge, defeating Missouri Southern 76-70 in the opener and falling to Pittsburg State by a final of 72-62.

SCSU, playing without NSIC North Preseason Player of the Year Gage Davis, relied on great forward play to dominate Missouri Southern. Senior Jon Averkamp began his year with a bang, knocking down 10-14 from the floor, including a career high 3 triples to finish with 25 points. JUCO transfer Sean Smith owned the glass for the Huskies, gobbling up 14 rebounds, 6 on the offensive boards, to go with his 4 points. Junior Brindley Theisen, expected to take a much larger role in 2017-18, finished with 23 points on 7-15 shooting.

The Huskies dropped their second game of the weekend against host squad Pittsburg State, and the blame could be firmly placed on the difference in spacing. SCSU hit just 6 of their 24 shots from deep, whereas Pittsburg State hit 10 of their 19, good for a blistering 52.6% clip from outside. The Gorillas had 4 different players hit at least 2 three balls. SCSU stumbled out of the gate, shooting .281/.133/.500 in the first half en route to a 12 point deficit at the break. Averkamp again scored 25 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Theisen was the only other Huskie to reach double-digit points with 16.

SCSU returns home this weekend to take on Mayville State (Friday at 7:00 p.m.) and St. John's (Saturday at 6:00 p.m.), with both games live on the KVSC Sports Stream. Husky Den Pregame with Thomas Breach, Nate Hageness, and Will Heyer begins at 6:30 on Friday and 5:45 on Saturday.
