Habitat For Humanity Names New Director To Lead St. Cloud

Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity has announced a new executive director.

Spokeswoman Alicia Chapman says Rick Nelson will now serve as executive director for the CMHFH. Nelson plans to sustain and grow the organization’s impact. Nelson says he is so glad for the opportunity to lead a nonprofit organization within the greater St. Cloud community.

Habitat for Humanity works to make home ownership affordable for families through donors and volunteers. Nelson will lead the 28-year-old organization starting in 2018.

Two Men Found Dead In St. Cloud Apartment Declared Murder-Suicide

A shooting death last week in St. Cloud has been declared a murder-suicide.

St. Cloud Police say on Friday, December 22 just before 3:30 p.m. officers were called to an apartment in the 500 Block of 8th Avenue North after a report of two men discovered dead. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office on Wednesday identified the men as 19-year-old Benedict Gerard Frank and 20-year-old Larry David Thompson.

Both men lived in the apartment where the bodies were found. The Examiner’s office says Frank died from single gunshot wound and Thompson died as a result of suicide.

St. Cloud Non-Profit Will Hold Discussions About Vietnam

In remembrance of Vietnam, one St. Cloud non-profit has hit it big with a grant.

A spokesperson for the HomeFront Resource Center in St. Cloud announced the non-profit received a $20,000 grant from the Minnesota Humanities Center to hold discussions on Central Minnesota Remembers Vietnam. The discussions offer community members a chance to share stories.

The HomeFront Resource Center will begin holding events in spring 2018 to remember the war in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

The organization has a professional staff member assisting veterans, active service members and families with education, housing, employment, wellness and family needs.

Roads Closed As Suspicious Package Near Amtrak Station Investigated

Several roads were closed in northeast St. Cloud Thursday morning as authorities tried to identify a suspicious package.

The St. Cloud Police Department were called to the 200 block of 4th Avenue Northeast around 9 a.m. with the report of a suspicious item on the boulevard. This area is near the Amtrak train station. They closed off several roads as a precaution and contacted the Minneapolis Bomb Squad to identify the item.

By noon they determined it was not explosive after an X-ray by the bomb squad. However, the item was made to look like an explosive device.

St. Cloud Police are investigating.

Authorities Seeking Help Locating Missing St. Cloud VA Patient

The St. Cloud Veterans Administration Police Department is seeking the public's help in locating a veteran.

They are looking for 65-year-old Dennis Anton Jesh. He was last seen at the St. Cloud V.A. Hospital campus at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20. Jesh was last seen wearing a black leather jacket and work boots.

He is non-ambulatory so he is using a yellow powered wheelchair. Jesh is also known to wear paperclips in his nostrils. Medical staff believe he may have boarded a city bus to depart the hospital campus but authorities have been unable to locate him and there is concern for his welfare.

If you have seen Dennis Jesh or know of his whereabouts, call 9-1-1 or the St. Cloud VA PD at 320-255-6355.

Traveling in the winter can be stressful and dangerous if not met with caution. As always, drivers are encouraged to slow down and hold focus while driving. Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Gutknect had this to add.

Patti Gartland Re-Appointed to Metropolitan Airports Commission

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has re-appointed the President of the Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation to a state commission.

Patti Gartland was re-appointed to the Metropolitan Airports Commission, as announced by the governor's office. Her new term will continue until January 2022.

Gartland has more than 30 years in economic and city planning in Central Minnesota communities.

The Metropolitan Airports Commission is made up of 15 appointed commissioners. They own and operate Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and six airports outside of the Twin Cities.

Rotary Club Of St. Cloud Receives 2017 Reflection of the Year Award

The Rotary Club of St. Cloud was recognized on Tuesday for their contributions to St. Cloud.

The 2017 Reflection of the Year Award was presented by Mayor Dave Kleis to the St. Cloud Rotary Club during their weekly meeting on Tuesday. The Reflection of the year award is given to an individual or organization once a year who has gone above and beyond to make St. Cloud a wonderful place to live, work, and grow.

Some of the rotary club’s efforts include sponsoring Summertime by lake George, working on the St. cloud Mississippi Riverwalk, and their most recent initiative to tackle the issue of youth homelessness through the New Youth Resource Center.

Fatal Crash On Highway 10 Near Elk River

An elderly man has died after a Sunday morning crash near Elk River.

State Patrol Sergeant Jesse Gabrow says around 10:15 a.m. 92-year-old Raymond Wallace Christensen of Elk River was driving east on Highway 10 in the wrong lane. Christensen then hit 32-year-old Marie Rose Nikle of Big Lake who was in the correct lane.

Christensen died as a result of the crash. Nikle was taken to Mercy Hospital for life-threatening injuries.

Man Arrested After Trying To Get Into Vehicles at Target

A man was arrested after trying to get in cars with people already in them.

St. Cloud Assistant Police Chief Jeff Oxton says 39-year-old Jose Carlos Lopez was seen trying to pull door handles of cars in the Target parking lot on West Division Street on Sunday at 4 p.m. Witnesses said that the man had pulled on multiple handles including cars that were moving. Lopez was also seen trying to pull a purse away from a woman in the area.

He was taken to the Stearns County jail on charges of tampering with a motor vehicle.

Police are urging anyone who Lopez came in contact with to call the police at 320-251-1200.

 

Stearns County Recognized for Support of Breastfeeding Mothers

Stearns County has been recognized for supporting nursing mothers.

Stearns County's Human Services Public Health Division received the Breastfeeding Friendly Health Department Award from the Minnesota Department of Health. The award recognizes the communities commitment of supporting healthy families as well as the commitment by local workplaces, maternity centers and health departments.

Stearns County received the silver award which represents the steps that an organization met.

Road Closure In South St. Cloud

Traffic in south St. Cloud will be affected on Friday.

St. Cloud City Engineers Office says 9th Street South between 9th and 10th Avenues South will be closed for utility work.

The closure will only be on December 15, detours will be posted.

Man Arrested For 2nd Degree Assault And Firearm Possession

A popped tire Wednesday evening in south St. Cloud led to an arrest.

St. Cloud Assistant Police Chief Jeff Oxton says a man had pulled over in a parking lot in the 10 block of 4th Avenue Southeast for engine problems. The man heard two shots and noticed his tire was leaking air. The shots came from a house right across from the parking lot.

When police arrived they found 42-year-old Robert Ryan Zimmer with an uncased air rifle next to a window without a screen. Officers discovered Zimmer has a past felony conviction and located several other firearms within the house.

Zimmer was arrested for 2nd Degree Assault for shooting at the vehicle and felon in possession of a firearm. He is currently being held in the Benton County Jail.

No motive for the incident has been established.

Missing Cow Found North Of Brooten

A roaming cow on Tuesday morning has the sheriff’s office looking for an owner.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson says the cow was spotted 5 miles north of Brooten, possibly seen a week ago near Sauk Centre, which is nearly 23 miles away. The cow does have an ear tag but no owner has been named.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging cattle owners to check their herd and call in if they are missing a cow. You can contact the Sheriff's Office at (320)-251-4240. You must be able to name the tag ID and describe the cow.

Waite Park Road To Close For Water Line Repair

Construction in Waite Park will affect traffic flow Wednesday.

Waite Park Public Works says starting at 9a.m. 3rd Street South will be closed just west of the intersection with 2nd Avenue South for water line repairs.

Detour signs will be posted.
