Archived: St. Cloud State Meteorology Professor Among Creators Of Wildfire Prediction Tool

A tool that can help wildfire forecasting has been created by several researchers, including a St. Cloud State meteorology professor.

The U.S Forest Service says the Hot-Dry-Windy Index (HDW) would help fire managers anticipate conditions that have the potential to cause wildfires. The HDW predicts fires based on three variables: temperature, moisture, and wind.

St. Cloud State meteorology professor Alan Srock is the lead author of a study of the HDW. The science journal Atmosphere has published the study.

While the options for the tool have expanded, it’s not expected to be used on an operational basis until more tests have been run.
