Archived: DNR to Review Pike Regulations

The Department of Natural Resources will be holding a meeting to gather public input on experimental fishing regulations for northern pike.

The regulations were put into place on East and West Lake Sylvia in Wright County in 2009. Under the experimental order, all northern pike between 24-36 inches must immediately be released, and one over 36 inches is allowed to be kept with a limit of three.

Since the regulations were put into place, the average size of northern pike has gone down from 22-inches to 19-inches with the percentage of pike between 24 and 30 inches also decreasing.

The fisheries data has shown applying these experimental rules would benefit northern pike populations statewide.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 4th from 6-8 p.m. at the Southside Township Hall in Annandale.
